Sony Confirms More Than 99% Of PS4 Games Will Be Playable On PS5 On Launch Day

There's been a lot of confusion and speculation surrounding the backwards compatible functionality of the PlayStation 5 and which games the next-gen console will support. We've known for a while that the PS5 would be backwards compatible with PS4 games, but we weren't sure to what extent. Now we know it will be the "overwhelming majority" of the PlayStation 4's current library.

In a PlayStation Support article, Sony confirmsed that the "overwhelming majority" of the 4,000-plus PS4 games will be playable on PlayStation 5. And in some instances, the games will beneft from the PS5's Game Boost, meaning they'll run at a higher or smoother frame rate.

Sony does warn, however, that some PS4 games "may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles."

According to Sony, 99% of the PS4 games will be playable on the PlayStation 5 on day one, including The Last of Us Part II and Ghosts of Tsushima. We don't have a complete list since that would consist of over 4,000 titles, but Sony did provide a list of 10 that will definitely not be playable on PS5. They are:

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man - Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe's Diner

Sony says PS4 games that won't be compatible with the PlayStation 5 will be marked "Playable on: PS4 only" in the PlayStation Store. They also recommend that you test out your PS4 games on the PlayStation 5 before buying any add-ons.

The PlayStation 5 is set to launch on November 12. In addition to the $499 standard console, there's a $399 Digital Edition with no disc drive also available.
