With an impressive 3.4 million physical copies sold in Japan — 3,383,582 to be a little bit more precise — Nintendo and Bandai Namco's critically acclaimed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has become Japan's best-selling video game console title of the decade.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released in December of last year, and it immediately became a massive hit, with Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealing that the crossover fighting title had managed to sell an overwhelming 5 million copies worldwide within its first week since launch.
Out of those 5 million copies, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold a very impressive 1.3 million in Japan within that first week after it released; quickly establishing the popular fighting game as one of the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch titles in Japan.
According to the information revealed today, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield could come close to the sales numbers that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has already managed to pull; fairly impressive, considering that Pokémon Sword/Shield has only been out for a bit over a month.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield is already tracking nicely, as we have already reported that the Pocket Monster title has sold 6 million units worldwide in combined sales.
While the newest entry in the Pokémon series is technically two games, it is still impressive that it managed to outsell Super Smash Bros. Ultimate within a similar timespan in regards to their respective releases.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is currently available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 3.4 million units in Japan which is the most a console game has sold in Japan in well over 10 years. If Pokemon Sword/Shield keeps selling like this, it's going to get very close.
